Mayor's Institute on City Design: Virtual Seminar: Attaining Quality Urban Design through City Leadership

Virtual Seminars are engaging and interactive learning opportunities for small groups of mayors and their senior staff. Each one-hour seminar features a deep-dive presentation on a single timely topic, followed by a moderated group discussion among the attendees.

This seminar explores ways that mayors can embed design thinking and design excellence into city administration. From mayor’s design awards to cabinet positions, to the design of city hall itself, how mayors shape local administration is key to creating more livable, equitable, and thriving communities.

This seminar revisits a presentation originally shared at the United States Conference of Mayors 92nd Annual Meeting in June 2024.

While registration is limited to mayors and city staff, a recording of the presentation will be posted after the event.

In consultation with community leaders and historians, the third and final cohort of artists, Victoria Fu, Yassi Mazandi, Rashaad Newsome, Ruben Ortiz Torres, and Alison Saar, use the lens of collective ancestral memory to examine the individual and communal legacies we leave today.

The monuments can also be experienced by anyone around the world on Snapchat by searching in Lens Explorer or scanning the QR codes below. The Meteors of Summer - The 2021 Perseids

This August 12th the annual Perseid Meteor shower should peak, at a time when moonlight is relatively absent and the sky fairly dark.  These are prime conditions for viewing meteors, but just as significant this year, it is just barely possible that some cautious get togethers might finally be possible without undue viral  risk!  We’ll discuss these spectacular sights in the sky and explore their amazing journey through space and time, touching upon their regularity and the reasons for it.  We’ll also discuss best ways to enjoy this summer sky show.  Hint – no telescopes required, though a lounge chair is a plus.  This is astronomy for couch potatoes.  Heads Up!
